1 year ago today I was fired from my day job and today is my fireversary. At the time I got fired, I was very upset like most people understandably are, but if I could have looked forward one year to today I couldn’t be more happy with how things turned out. Yes, as cliche as it sounds, after 1 year of being force-ably self employed I can easily say it was the best thing that ever happened to me.
Why Getting Fired Was The Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me:
I’ve explained how I got fired in some previous posts and I even gave my advice on how to quit your day job the right way (instead of just getting fired and being flung into a sink or swim environment like I did), but I want to tell you why it was the best thing that ever happened to me:
1. Setting your own schedule is just as amazing as everyone says it is:
Working for yourself can be difficult, but there is nothing more satisfying than saying Halo: Reach is coming out tomorrow so I’m not going to work today and then proceeding to play throughout the entire day. It’s even better if you combine sending out text messages to your friends saying how great the game is and what they’re missing (just kidding I’m not that mean).
2. My income earning potential is completely uncapped:
What people see on this blog is only a small portion of my business and I’m working on projects that have huge potential using the skills I’ve learned over the years of just working as hard as I can every day after coming home from an 8 hour work day. In fact, I set a goal to earn $150k in 2010 and I still might do it (a lot of my income comes from the holiday season). It’s important to remember that this target is coming off of earning “only” $60k in a high stress sales job. For those interested on how I did it, here is how I used a video game (Halo) to start my business online.
3. I get to teach people how to do the same thing I did:
If you don’t want to run your own business and be your own boss that’s fine with me, but I hope you’re here because you’d really like to make an extra $1,000+ a month. I love getting emails from people that are grateful for the information I’ve given away freely or via my paid product Niche Profit Course. I have a friend that I finally convinced to make his first website and in just a couple month’s time he was making $100 a month with it. Now that he’s finally seen the potential first hand he’s really going after it now and in the process of doing several more websites as well. I think one of the hardest things is to just plain do something instead of reading about it.
How Am I Celebrating My Fireversary?
I’m in Las Vegas at the Blog World Expo and I’m celebrating by finally getting out of the office and taking the opportunity to see other people “living the dream” and to meet others who are on their way to do the same. As I said before, I think the best thing you can do is to start doing and stop reading (well you should keep reading what I have to say of course though).
To Your Success!

Hi Chris
This is great and inspiring.I have did some detective work and find out your 6 to 7 niche marketing website.I know how to get google top ranking so I also created a product niche website. The website is started is one day before. If i am unable to make money with it the I am going to take your course.I really love the techniques that you used for niche marketing.
Hope I will leave college within my first year and will celebrate college dropperversary if everything happens.
Thanks For Motivation
Abhishek
My biggest money makers are sites that I host on another server and do under a pen name. The ones you may have found are probably just my smallest ones. In any case, I cover much more of my strategy with my Niche Profit Course
Congrats to your achievement.
I am also on my way to that level. I’m developing another site this month.
For many, the traditional 9-5 path is the best path. It depends on the person.
Meh, my argument is against the people that believe working a job for 30 years with 2 weeks of vacation a year and then retiring is the ONLY way. My point is that thanks to the Internet there are way more opportunities than before.
Chris,
Congratulations! What an awesome story! I have learned a lot from your blog and hope to see you at another conference one of these days. Couldn’t make Blog World but maybe next year! All the best,
Ian
Hey Ian, yah I plan to have a few more conversations with you ๐ I saw your email I just haven’t had a chance to answer. I’m doing three product launches at the same time now lol (iPhone app, wordpress plugin and new clickbank product outside IM niche.)

Thanks for stopping by Anna! Yes, I love being in a wide range of businesses at once (iPhone apps, clickbank product creation, Amazon affiliate, buying / selling websites, email marketing etc it’s a blast!
Hey Chris,
Congratulations of your Fireaversary! It’s awesome that you turned a firing into such a positive thing for yourself. Plus, becoming a success with blogging and Halo playing is really inspirational.
