I’m going to need a bigger cupcake

Four years ago I was fired from the last “real job” I’ve ever had as an inside sales rep for a technology company. At the time I was earning more than the average household at $60,000 per year (after salary and commissions) so I had little to complain about other than that I really wanted to be building my own business instead of working for someone else.

Fortunately the side job I spent 10 – 20 percent of my time on had started to eclipse my day job income so when I was fired I took it as the kick in the pants that I needed to make my online business work long term. That’s the short version of what happened four years ago and if you wanted to learn more here’s the long version of how I built a six figure business the very next year after getting fired from my day job.

In any case, although not officially recognized as a word – yet ๐Ÿ˜€ – today is an occasion I’ve marked each year on my blog (fireversary year 1, 2, and 3 here) as the best thing that ever happened to my career life.

It will catch on some day...

It will catch on some day…

In past fireversary posts I’ve shared stories like how I used to earn $13 an hour testing video games or why getting fired was the best thing that ever happened to me, but this time around I’d like to just share one piece of advice I’ve learned in the last 4 years that I still have trouble sticking to…

#1 Thing I’ve Learned About Business In Last 4 Years

I’ve made money in a lot of different ways over the last 4 years including: Amazon Associates, Google Adsense, buying and selling websites, information products, software, Kindle books, affiliate marketing and a plethora of other companies and sources.

Bottom Line: The more I focus in on one thing the more financial success I tend to have.

This rule applies to whether I’m working on a specific website, an individual product or anything else for that matter. This sounds like obvious advice and maybe it is, but it’s a constant battle to avoid getting distracted by the shiny objects.

If you’re quickly skimming over this article without letting it sink in you may miss the point so I just want to reiterate that if you’re trying to make some extra money online or want to build your hobby into a full time business it’s worth focusing in one thing.

That one thing could be different for you than it is for me – that’s fine – but just be sure you pick that one thing and really go after it.

Every one of my online friends earning higher range six figure ($250k+) and seven figure incomes got there by focusing on one thing.

When you determine your primary focus it’s much easier to analyze “how does this [insert new thing] help me?” if the answer doesn’t fit your primary focus, set it aside.

Have you picked one thing to focus on?

I would love to hear what you think in the comments below. I enjoy sharing what I’ve learned on this blog as a way to help others avoid mistakes that I’ve made. Learning this lesson of focusing in on one thing is precisely why I’ve been selling off projects so that I can focus in on my primary business with as few distractions as possible.

I hope you take my advice and if you do be sure to tell me about it.
