How Elite Retreat Helped Me Triple My Income After Getting Fired From My Day Job
Shoemoney is the guy behind the Elite Retreat event and registration for the next event opens to the public on June 14th at 10:00 AM CST. After re-reading my old Elite Retreat review I thought I’d write the follow up blog post that I said I would but never did. So this is the follow up to my original Elite Retreat review from an attendee’s perspective who got fired just 2 weeks after attending Elite Retreat in New York back in late 2009.
Why I Went To Elite Retreat:
I used to spend my free time after working a 9 – 5 job building websites while trying to find ways to make enough money to quit my day job. After numerous failures and moderate successes I started doing pretty well starting in early 2009. By the fall of 2009 I was earning around $5k – $7k in profit per month from the organic traffic I was receiving which was at the time more money than my 50+ hours a week high stress sales job was providing me. I went to Elite Retreat because I’d already read several positive reviews and I was at a stage in my business where I wanted to find out how I could take my income to the next level.
I had an opportunity to have meaningful conversations with almost every attendee at the event (something that never happens at most conferences). I can’t share any of the specific strategies I learned that I later implemented into my business thanks to the NDA, but as I left New York to head back to Seattle, I knew that my money was well spent.
Getting Fired Two Weeks Later:
After I returned from Elite Retreat I was fired from my day job just 2 weeks later. I wasn’t planning on quitting for at least a few months but plans change. I was making too much money to claim unemployment (not a bad thing obviously) and with the money I was making it didn’t make a lot of sense to go find another career job. At that point, I decided that this was a blessing in disguise. I had already begun implementing strategies into my various websites that the speakers and attendees shared with me and by the end of the year I had already doubled my monthly income (seasonality did play some factor, but after the holidays my income still remained higher than average).
How Elite Retreat Helped Me Sell My First Website For Six Figures:
In my first full year of self employment in 2010 I more than tripled my old day job income through a combination of the ongoing advice and conversations I had with past attendees and through an intro to an investment banker that I received from a past Elite Retreat attendee. The investment banker generally only sold websites in the seven figure range and up but he said, “Because you’re from Elite Retreat, I know it’s only a matter of time before you’ll need my services again for an even bigger sale.” A few months later I had my first six figure website sale (website sale details here).
Why Elite Retreat Was Well Worth The Price:
If it weren’t for the people I met at Elite Retreat I probably wouldn’t have sold my website for six figures last year, more than tripled my old day job income and I probably wouldn’t be in the position that I am today. So for that I publicly thank you Shoemoney and my fellow Elite Retreat alumni.
[…] I waspleasantlysurprised this morning to see Chris Guthrie’s post on his blog titled “How Elite Retreat Helped Me Triple My Income After Getting Fired From My Day Job” […]
Thanks for sharing man, that is pretty cool. thanks to Jermey’s post I found your website.
Hey Edgar, thanks I’m glad you stopped by. Nice talking to you via email and best of luck with the site. Let me know when you’re looking to sell.
I have been with the shoemoney system for three months mow what advice do you have for me.
Not specific enough of a question… but I’d say pick one thing and be better than everyone else at it. Apply this strategy for anything. For example, I sold my website for six figures based on netbooks. So I focused on having the best website about netbooks.
Chris do you think that the investment banker helped you get a higher price for the website you sold?
100% yes. I believe marketplaces for websites aren’t the best way to sell websites in the six figure range and up. Think of it this way. If you’re looking to sell a website for six figures+ the typical buyer is much different because they already have a lot of liquid capital and likely don’t like to waste time. When you’re dealing with marketplaces these buyers don’t like to filter through the absolute crap that’s found there and a broker brings them deals on good sites they are selling.
Better brokers only sell good websites too whereas marketplaces are financially incentivized to sell as many websites as possible.
So that being said, if you have a site that’s worth six figures plus hit me up via email and I’ll give you some more specific advice.
Can we get some more information about the retreat? or is that not allowed?
Biggest suggestion is that if you’re already making a full time income from your websites I think it’s worth it. Check out the speakers page though to see who will be there.
Came here from Shoemoney’s site and that is amazing! So happy for the success
Glad you were able to stop by!
Hi, I have so far used only Flippa to sell my websites and to be honest, sometimes I come across websites which are worth nothing and yet are being sold at thousands of dollars. What according to you will classify a website within the six figure range? I mean how much traffic and income are we talking about here?
Income level would be minimum of 33k per year. Traffic is irrelevant. Could be 1MM page views for some celebrity blog or it could be 50k page views for some website on small business loan applications.
Congratulations for you success after been fired. This kind of post help me to keep going in my blogs. Actually i am eraning more money with them than with my 8 hours job.
