I’ve been pondering the idea of upgrading some of my forums to the latest version of vBulletin, but what has held me back is the fact that upgrading vBulletin is a huge pain.
What I love so much about WordPress is that it’s so easy to upgrade and manage plugins. I remember when I first started blogging and I held off on upgrading to the latest version of WordPress because I was concerned about how difficult the process was going to be. To my surprise it was very easy and I’ve never had any issue during the upgrade process for the past 17+ months I’ve been blogging.
On the flip side, over the past three years of administering and managing vBulletin forums I’ve had numerous problems dealing with the vBulletin software than with WordPress. In particular the most time consuming task is working with old modifications that need to be upgrading after moving up to a new version of vBulletin. The settings on vBulletin plugins also frequently need adjustment after upgrading. In my opinion the time consumed while dealing with all apects of the vBulletin upgrade process has been much greater than with the WordPress upgrade process.
What do you think forum admins / bloggers? Have you found vBulletin more difficult to deal with than WordPress?
Agree 100% with you! vBulletin is a pain to upgrade and modify! WordPress is easy and smooth!
Chris ~ Working with vBulletin is definitely an exercise in patience and often leads to mind numbing headaches. I’ve been working on a customized skin for a forum I’m building at work and it’s definitely not the easiest thing in the world to do. Once you’ve gotten an idea of how things work it does progress a little bit quicker, but in no way is it nearly as user friendly as WordPress.
However, they’re completely different animals and you can’t really compare the two since vBulletin is such a robust system.
Yah, I understand what you’re saying Bryan. I guess where I believe I’d like to see some strides on the vBulletin front is in the usability (from an installation and plugin management focus).
Perhaps things are better with vB 3.7x though
I have to say hands down wp blows away vbulletin as far as reliability and ease of use for the webmasters.
It would be very nice to see a mod or plugin or a hacked up version of wp that was secure and solid like vbulletin for a forum. Who knows.
I have a flash site
i’m looking for the script who shows google adsense with flash.
where can i get it?
VBulletin is a joke.
No customer support whatsoever, obnoxious Uk developers, not easily updated, poor features for the money.
I purchased my VBulletin program outright so I own this mess and like a fool, I paid for another year of “updates”.
I was promised customer support by email only, and EVERY time I email support, they tell me to ask my question in thier crappy forums and ask other paying members for help.
Are they kidding me?
99% of them members could care less about my promlems and questions about the crappy software and they only will answer you if you PAY them or BUY their crappy add on.
Sorry guys, but I paid $150 for the program and another $50 for a year of support and udates. The SOFTWARE DEVELOPER SHOULD HELP ME USE their program, NOT OTHER CLIENTS. Who never do anyway, as it is NOT THEIR JOB to.
Sorry for the typos and spelling “their” as “thier”.
It is late and I am pissed off.
I’ve made a mistake purchasing vBulletin several years ago. Now they ask to pay $60 for a license renewal even if I already “own” it. Also they ask $150 (without any importation, that’s extra!) to upgrade to the next version! Well, I’d live without an upgrade, but someone logged into my forum (not a break in!) and messed it up. Now I’m getting this:
Could not find phrase ‘birthday’.
Could not find phrase ‘newuser’.
Could not find phrase ‘activateaccount’.
Could not find phrase ‘newuser’.
Well, I went to vbulletin.com and submitted my service request and entered all my sensitive data (passwords etc.), They got back to me that I did not do it correctly. They told me how much it will cost (the correct amount) then I went and submitted a support ticket in their “ticket system” again. The response was that I must first renew my license ($60) then wait acouple days and submit a request to upgrade for $150 and hopefully they will also fix (for extra money) the above problem, who I suspect who damaged it. Sounds painful enough knowing that my forum so far earned me $0,00. I decided to dump it and lose about $300 yet I’m gonna try something else like WordPress or phpBB.Can you advise which forum soft are the best?
Thanks
John

Hey Guys,
I am a student (limited budget) and have seen a few offers for free ipods and iphones. Does anyone Know if any if the free IPhone or Ipod offers are actually legit? I don’t want to waste my time filling out a hundred surveys and was hoping to hear from someone who may have had some success with this.
Thanks

My post moderation page is 10mb in size and my browser freezed till it loaded, and the save button is in the middle of the page and i have to slowly scroll to find that.
And they charge for the f****** updates, I feel like punching right in their face.

I don’t mind the admin UI, I don’t see why some people dislike it.
I don’t care fore 4.0 and it’s rush to get it out.
I hope for the best, but I’ve moved on to IPB and I’m starting to get the hang of it. http://www.IPBSetup.com is the forum if you want to check out what a real forum script looks like.

I found vBulletin to be extremely difficult to manage, and had a very steep learning curve (I’m no web programmer, but I’m not computer illiterate either). I am desperately waiting for WordPress to turn their bbPress forum software into a full fledged WordPress plugin, so that it will be just as easy to setup a wordpress blog, as it will be to setup a wordpress forum. Right now their bbPress platform works seperate from WordPress, but once the plugin comes around, you can use the same user database for your website and the forums. It’s going to really boost all website’s membership count I believe.

Hay Chris, I found exactly what you need. Its called SimplePress and it works with WORDPRESS. Its here and its FREE: http://simple-press.com/
*applause from all the vBulletin haters*
Thank you, thank you.
You should of gone with Simple Machines. Excellant forum software, completely free in price. vBulletin don’t care about their customers and they are con artists.
