After announcing my shift in strategy towards higher quality authority style websites in the last podcast I posted, I’ve considered selling off a few dozen of my websites as well.
What Would I Be Selling?
1. Unfinished niche websites
These are basically where I did the keyword research, bought the domain name, had some content created and may or may not have started some limited link building (assume no earnings)
Probably just $100 each for these (to recoup costs basically)
Some of these I’ve paid $250 – $500 for the domains but just got too busy with other projects to really pursue them. In these cases I’d likely just try to sell for the price I bought the domain names for.
2. Income generating niche websites
These are smaller websites that are complete. They’ve had content created for them and have generated money in 2012.
I would likely sell these based on an income multiple of between 12x to 24x monthly earnings (I’d need to do some more searching to see what multiples these types of sites are selling for)
Again in this case some of these sites are sitting on more premium style domain names as well in the $250 – $500 range so that would likely be factored into the price as well.
3. Income generating authority style websites
I’m really trying to focus only on projects that are generating at least $1,000 per month or more. Frankly even my case study website Copy Cat Crafts falls a bit short of the $1,000 per month mark.
Overall, I have about a dozen websites that are generating under $1,000 per month that I’d be interested in selling (might be less than that but I’d need to check my Adsense / Amazon / etc stats as I don’t check them daily or even weekly).
Overall – I want to remove “distractions” in my portfolio
I still like making a few hundred dollars a month or more from each of these websites that I own, but as I’ve stated before I’m at a spot in my business where I really need to focus on projects that can have a larger impact on my business and that’s why I’m looking to sell some of my smaller websites.
So my question to you is, are you interested in buying any of my websites? Update: just sign up for my blog email list below I will send out all the details there (too many emails)
Perhaps I’ll just list every website on Flippa and share the income results from my purge of distracting projects. I estimate that the proceeds from the sale of these websites, domains etc. would be into the five figures so rather than just let them sit it might be worth getting the cash now instead.
Chris,
Good luck on the selling of your sites and the direction you’re taking with authority sites! I too, and focusing much on authority sites rather then small niches.
All the best!

Chris, I’m just curious. Have you thought about hiring an employee/independent contractor to run/develop these sites? It would obviously be a basic cost/benefit comparision of what you would pay them vs. what the sites bring in. Not to mention your time of training/managing that person.
I think that it’s just the mental aspect of having to think about the projects or think about training and managing someone that doesn’t sound appealing to me. The larger sites that make more money that I use are pretty simply run in the sense that I’ve hired writers, they write great content and then I pay them well for their work and the sites are about as auto pilot as they can get.
But teaching someone how to do link building experiments etc. etc. for niche websites just seems to boring to me. I need new challenges.
Frankly every time I reflect on my professional life I find it crazy the various ways I’ve made money doing entirely new things one year compared to the next year etc.
Best of luck selling the sites. Focusing on fewer projects is something I’ve found helpful in the past too. Probably the hardest part is not giving in to the temptation to take on yet another idea after the cleanout.
I’ve just recently done a similar thing. I sold of a majority of my micro-niche EMD’s to provide extra cash flow for some other projects, and focus on my authority websites. My plan is to create a portfolio of quality authority websites that will each be earning a minimum of 1000 a month. I hope you do well selling off your “Distractions”.
Cheers, Matthew
Hey Matthew, hope that has helped you get focused on your other projects. I’m in the midst of preparing for the launch of a new business that is related to online marketing and so I want to free up time for that. I also have some other bigger websites I would prefer to focus on as well 🙂
I am interested in authority site like copycat. Can you contact me?
Join my blog list I’ll be sending details out then.
What you may consider a distraction might be an opportunity for someone else. I would be interested to have a look at the list of websites and purchase something.
I would like to purchase some sites too, let me know how to get more details, we can close through paypal or escrow.
Hi Chris,
I may be interested in some of them as well.
Thanks for providing a list of the ones you want to sell.
Kind regards,
M.
Chris,
I’m interested in taking a look at your income generating niche sites. I am looking to buy established sites right now. I have not been finding many attractive sites on Flippa and frankly the time it takes to wade through all the low quality sites almost isn’t worth it, so I am very interested. Thanks!
Going to email my entire blog list the batch of websites I’m looking to sell I think or do a blog post. I’m trying to sand bag November and December earnings as much as I can so I’ll likely sell everything that I don’t want in January most likely.
Chris
Holy crap!.. You must really be loosing faith in micro sites ehh? Haha I imagine the income fraction must be so small now that you are ready to get rid of your so called gold mines
Hey Chris,
I’d consider most of my websites like the online equivalent of a rental property. Some of the properties are already in a rough neighborhood and struggle to survive (some of my niche sites) others were built up with a lot of quality and making me continuous good money but I need to shift my focus onto something larger.

I’m not satisfied with a website that makes me sub $1,000 a month even if I have to do relatively little work to keep that income. I want something bigger than that and that’s what I’m working on now.
Chris
Yeah, I agree with you Chris. It’s better to concentrate on a few well off sites rather than making the new ones grow right from the scratch. I’m now too selling off some of my niche sites and concentrating more on a few permanent blogs.
Pri,
I would be interested in some of your websites for sale (same goes for Chris).
Chris,
I am interested in the sites for sale if still available.
Will be posting them for sale sometime before Christmas
Hi chris, i am interested in buying your websites. Do mind giving me the prices and details of websites that you want to sell?
thank you and good luck in your authority sites journey.
Chris,
I’m very interested to have a look at the list of websites and purchase something.
Please giving me the prices and details of websites that you want to sell ?
Best regards,
Jason
Chris,
I agree that it can be easy to get distracted by starting too many projects or in this case websites. I have done the same thing before and have been trying to focus all my attention on my blog. Good luck to you in 2013.

If there are any site available still, please let me know. Very interested. Thanks.
Sorry none right now…
Chris,
Do you have any more websites available for purchase? I am very interested.
Thank you,
Melissa
